UID (Business Identification Number)
The unique, nationwide identification number for businesses in Switzerland. It has replaced the old commercial register and VAT numbers and is mandatory for VAT registration.
Real-World Example for SURS Customers
Before a foreign merchant can become VAT-liable in Switzerland, SURS applies for a UID on their behalf from the Federal Statistical Office. This number is then registered with the Federal Tax Administration (FTA) for VAT purposes.
